The Dismal Colors of War

by Antoinette Kopperfield — Read all 219 poems by Antoinette Kopperfield

Revised and reposted...
my feelings on the war

Monday, May 9, 2005

the black and white
untold truths about war
has tarnished
my stainless-steel life
as another senseless
red-colored death
falls sharply
from the brazen arms
of an arrogant
cold-hearted rebel

I dreamt of
a peaceful blue
co-existence-
and I gave myself
a false illusion
that the war was over-
when our own soldiers
became prey
to the dense
black mastermind
of human deceit

the shiny lavender hearts
of honor-bound men
defend us far from home
when the somber grey moods
of repugnant suicide bombers
leave behind...
a crimson trail
of innocent people-
and they are buried
along with...
those dark
unresolved hatreds

and then...
my own mothers love
can never replace
this dark hopeless feeling
of loss
and I read it
again....
a soldier's death

and I have become...
caught up
strapped and bound-
by the dismal colors of war
