He stands on a street
with a cup half-empty,
Coins are tossed
as though
he were a seal
in shallow water
and he is hungry
for another meal.
His eyes of hope
catch your glance
if you are looking,
and if turn
you will never know
his pain.
His full-time job
is survival.
Though he is dry
and thirsty
from the sun,
his legs are tired
with no chair
and sometimes
he feels like dying
though he asks again.
You see his face
and his gratitude,
and though
your gift is small
he says "thank you"
and he moves on.
There is a car
with another driver,
and like yours,
his heart
was throbbing
from compassion.
