Our Need for Love
by Antoinette Kopperfield — Read all 219 poems by Antoinette Kopperfield
I rewrote a poem from two years ago about my garden. I was inspired to change the original poem when an editor asked me for a summer poem to be included in her upcoming summer issue for her online magazine. Don't worry I am not dying-they are just my thoughts on paper.

I see the bees
as they buzz
sucking nectar
from little marigolds
though I know
we will both see summer
for the last time
Crickets chirp
in the distance
making screeching sounds
as though they had sirens
while the stone beetles
lay quietly
on their backs
and they will never
walk again
Amid the violet skies
I feel the threat of raindrops
and there is thunder
pounding
far in the distance
while the wind
has done it's job
by bending the necks
on the tall and obtrusive weeds
and as I swing back and forth
on my old garden chair
I am thinking
more about life
and the struggles
and also
about death and dying
and our need for love
