The Colors of War

by Antoinette Kopperfield — Read all 219 poems by Antoinette Kopperfield

Tuesday, November 18, 2003

The black and white untold truths about war
has tarnished our stainless steel lives
as senseless scarlet colored deaths
fall sharply from the brazen yellow arms
of arrogant cold-hearted rebels

As we dreamt of a peaceful blue co-existence
they gave us a hazy false illusion
that the war was over
and our own soldiers became prey
to the dense black masterminds of human deceit

The shiny lavender hearts of honor-bound men
defended us far from home
as the somber grey moods of repugnant suicide bombers
left behind a red crimson trail of innocent civilians
with dark unresolved hatreds

Although our own mother's love
could never replace the dark hopeless feelings of loss
as we read about our own comrade's deaths
we ourselves become caught up, strapped and bound
by the dismal colors of war
