Our sheltered world crumbled
as marble floors disintegrated
and our dazzling bronze statues
lay scorched from dense heated fires
which also burned our souls
Life became like a shattered dream
as though it had green envious eyes
forcing our smoke-filled bodies out onto the streets
like deficient homeless survivors
with only shreds of day-old clothing to comfort us
Our embellished neighbors
who sit amongst us now
are like old tired friends in rowhouses
dissecting our few consoling words
trying to unite our principality which no longer exists
As we find the remains of our fragmented hearts
among the scattered ashes
we examine our snapshots of happier moments
only to find tarred pieces of burned scrapbooks
with melted images
