so I couldn’t go to my parents
work, life, fog, traffic
haven’t been there in years for
thanksgiving
but they always ask if I’m going to make it
this year
and
my sibling’s call and call and call
how big of a turkey do you think we’ll need
what a 25 pounder
I mean your kids eat a lot of it right
and I say
ever so patiently
w e a r e ‘ n t g o i n g t o b e t h e r e
articulating very carefully
oh well then I guess a 15 pounder will do
like we could eat 10 pounds of turkey
and
the calls go back and forth all day
got your turkey in
man I’m making nana’s oyster stuffing
I love the way it smells
what time are you guys eating
who’s there
how many pies did you make
blah blah blah
and
all is well, and I talked to everyone at least
five times and I’m happy
and then
the phone rings
right when I’m trying to figure out how to load
the refrigerator
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
your on speaker phone we want you to say grace
me
grace
panic
dear god are you nuts
I’ve had five glasses of wine, and my entire family
is assembled
turkey on the table
picture in my mind white tablecloth, Sunday clothes
crystal, steaming food
and
they are all waiting for ME to bless it GOOD GRIEF
deep breathe
sigh
and I hear a sister say
don’t make us cry
great no pressure here shit howdy
and
truthfully
I have no idea what I said
thanks for this food
thanks for our health
bless us one and all
now Go Eat!!!
and I was a blubbering crybaby mess
good lord
what a stinking thing to do
I said Why did you call Me to do this
same sister says Were all sinners here
well WE’RE ALL SINNERS HERE TOO!
and
I know one thing for sure
next year
I’m going to my mom and dad’s
for thanksgiving
and they can just put someone else
on the
friggin
Speakerphone
for
grace

Fantastic write, Josefina. You expressed how I have felt many times. Hate being put on the spot but as the eldest in my family and highly regarded wherever I go, everyone expects me to do it.

Prayers at Thanksgiving make me cry also. This year, there were too many for sit down at the table. And for shame... :( everyone was so hungry, and scattered throughout the house with plates that we forgot. someone remembered after 10 min into the shoveling and said it. Most of us bowed our heads with mouthfuls of food. we're such greedy heathens.

Inherent Chaos by Terry Vinson

The fortunate inherit riches, prestige, positive notoriety. Those not so lucky bear legacies filled with poverty, infamy or, worse yet, the unhinged insanity and murderous urges of their ancestors.
