Whenever I'm silent.

Some Other Verse

Originally written June, 1986

Somehow I think I had something to say
The last time that we were together;
It wasn’t earth-shaking, only a thought
To add spice to talk of the weather.

I did not make time to share it with you,
And I cannot remember it now;
I only know it was a thought for you,
And I’ll try to remember somehow.

‘Til then, I’ll just have to file it away
In my heart (that’s my most treasured purse);
One of these days, I’ll remember, but now,
I must call my thought “some other verse.”

I think there’s a song that I meant to sing
When we last shared our own special time;
It wasn’t a Top 40 melody,
Just a chorus of simple-song rhyme.

I thought it too silly to sing to you,
And by now, I have thrown it away;
Sad that just now, I’ve come to my senses,
But I know that I’ll sing it someday.

‘Til then, I’ll just have to file it away
In my heart (that’s my most treasured purse);
One of these days, I’ll remember, but now,
I must call my thought “some other verse.”

Daily I think of your meaning to me,
And the beautiful things that we share;
Neither unspoken thoughts, nor unsung songs
Could diminish the way that you care.

Today I will take the thought and the song,
Box it up in a sky of clear blue
(With heartstrings for ribbons and love for bows),
And then give the whole package to you.

Unwrap it with care, and tenderly place
In your most treasured pocket or purse,
And always remember: my silent words
Are none other than “some other verse.”
