The Decider (A Sonnet)

by Charles Keller — Read all 159 poems by Charles Keller

A parody of Shakespeare's Sonnet # 18
which reads:

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

Should I compare a brilliant man to thee?
Thou art less cunning and less reasoning:
Though lies did lead to things that should not be,
And lack of plans hath caus’d a tragic thing:
Sometime too cold the pit of Hell so deep,
And often is your gold concealed offshore;
The “Decider” should enter endless sleep
So history could doom him to folklore.
But thy eternal evil shall not fade
Nor lose possession of the title earned;
For most mistakes a human ever made,
While doomed you are to be forever burned:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
Your buddy Dick should burn along with thee.

CHuck,

This is not just excellent parody but excellent poetry. Your ability really shines through this one. Truly superb composition. Pity the subject's too illiterate and dumb to ever understand it!

Thanks for the heads up.

Keith

A scathing commentary of how a well-meanng, but dupted dunce was thrust to power and mishandled it.

He should give up his kingdom for a horse at Crawford.
