An Banged Up Old Storage Chest

by David Lester Young — Read all 1,103 poems by David Lester Young

A Treasure Chest is sometimes filled with Poet Tree bejeweled amidst sparkling seedlings.

What Poet Tree wood you put inside this Treasure Chest?

While no means banged up over rhyme everything outside ages in some way.

What if people bought a treasure chest to pass on loving memories.

An Banged Up Old Storage Chest

Tossed around bye multi-generations
Dented ‘n molded, over many worn eons
Weathered old in attic - garage cold space
Treasured heirloom, to be stowed away.

Fought over by siblings for sentimentality
Affluent wanting it, for reported hidden treasure
Fabled hidden pockets, bejeweled amid mystery
Humble wanting to reminisce, amidst romanticism.

Sibling --- who stayed home to care for aging parents
Were often encrusted, to decade repackage air looms
Layered amid dust, cracked yellow newspaper wraps
While sighing with tears - over years, be polished anew.

Strange how some that do not need it, just want it
To say they have it, not ever needing its poor memories
They gloat at being: The Alpha Supreme Alter Elite EGO
Rather trash it, than pass it on, to Beta off sprig kids.

Scowl --- knot getting it, they did not really want it - Fume
While laying claim to everything worthwhile - to sell it
Rushing in with family scavenger leech procession claims
That divide siblings, a gist Will - divorce property sib separations.

Some people bury family, deep in forget me stationary plots
That rest in place settling amid skeletal eternal solemn remains
While the rotating treasure storage chest shifts around rhyme
Where the bundle of sibling poems girth - grows with birth.

In fact, so much that digital recordings of Family Tree Verse
To Be Recorded - forever then even more, Too Bee immortalized
In the molded time, churning rewrapped newspaper around -
An Banged Up Old Storage Chest.

A different kind of write for you, but very intriguing. There isn't much conspiracy in my family. I have a beat up old bugle that my father blew in CCC camp. And my grandfather's toolbox that is actually a breadbox that has the image of the USS Constitution at sea on its top. Unfortunately, it is beat up and that image is fading from being exposed to much light over the years. Still, I cannot find another breadbox like it.

My sister has some of the hand-me-downs. I think my brothers have little or none. But what is most precious to me are the photographs from old albums so carefully chronicled making history come alive again from our family's simple lives. Also, some brief writing from my mother and from other relatives telling us what it was like for them to live in their time. Priceless.
