The Sparrow

by David Lester Young — Read all 1,103 poems by David Lester Young

Did this poem turn out as expected, or did it take a poetic twist on its ending?

Writing this one way at star, it did wander.

Why did I leave 3 long line in first form? (Hint check the CAPS.)

The Sparrow

A lone SPARROW
amongst flock of afternoon
squawking common crackles
Awakening every morning
amidst morning dove
cooing soft serenades
Its unique bellowing voice
that did not meet any kind
of flocking criteria
It was no pigeon
bobbing up and down
in mutual marching
clone cadences
Every time
it tried to assimilate
among other birds
it was marginalized -
lone

Oh
how the SPARROW
tried and tried to join
a gist harmony
they just flew off
Hearing pecking woodpeckers
it could not cling to bark
and it’s too small beak
Hurt like heck;
was it then
a hawk
but that would make
the SPARROW -
meal time
An hooting owl
but it could not
see at night
nor fly alight
new moon moonlight
Where
oh where
was its family presence
being raised by Blue Jays -
abandoned.

See gulls
just did not match
it’s legs
nor it’s seashore glide
shoreline wingspan
An eagle
oh come on
let us get real
it was not bald
nor hooked with beak -
claws
A canary darted
about its size
at last it had kin
till it found
it was the wrong color
Nor did it have
parrot plumage
or peacock appendages
did you say Hummingbirds?
Why they made it dizzy
darting to and fro
with buzzing bees
seeking sweet nectar.

Oh Too Bee
knot be would
a lone poet “SPARROW,”
sailing feather quilled passages
Spec-tacular Poetics Alight Radiant Resilience Oscillating Wanderings
Spontaneous Pronunciations Amongst Resounding Rhyme Osmosis Wonderings
Shakespearean Passages Adrift Reincarnated Recital Onstage Words-Worth
Did you flinch
did dye I to eyes wink
dost thee nibble fingers imagine
“The SPARROW”
(Are U a SPARROW
a UniQue Poet
or a Mockingbird Crackle?)

A refreshingly different poem. But I anticipate that the author envisioned himself as the SPARROW. The one who tried to fit in with different groups but always found that his poetic voice did not ring true among the others.
