she’s given everything she had
to those who simply took it
a little piece of her heart
all she has left to offer
his hand covers hers, gentle
a query as much as a touch
a what if, a maybe, exposed
in the way it lightly brushes
across the base of fingers
taking captive each nerve
pulsing within her flesh
her eyes lift to meet his
as she muses, “another man
offering another heartache”
his deep, expressive eyes
steeped in pain and promise
they pledge to her.... heaven,
or a possible prelude to hell?
but her heart sighs “yes”
and she wants him to be
the soft canopy of her sky
the dark depths of her ocean
when his eyes silently hold her
enraptured, suspended in time
and even if she drowns or falls
her cautious soul must uncover,
her shattered heart discover...
how deep the ocean
how high the sky
