Respite
By La Belle Rouge

A Double Sonnet

Rest your soul but a little while,
In shade ‘neath the ancient tree
For life has offered only denial
Of such sweet respite for thee.
And hear again, while you yet may,
Melodic song of the morning bird.
In a land of darkness do not stay
Where songs of dawn are unheard.
Forgetfulness a sure, true friend
A balm of healing for a weary heart.
Rule once more a kingdom of dreams
Where somber shadows must depart.
Rest your head on Mother Earth’s lap
And take thy rest in dream filled nap.

In your dream be who you are
Whether a lover, a poet or king.
Gather dearest comforts from afar
And let them to you sure solace bring.
And perhaps within loving fantasy
Of castles and noble ladies fair
You will share a dulcet kiss with me
And slay all my dark dragons there.
If you try you can inhale the scent
Perfumed fragrance of a red rose.
Let all your love and life be spent
In the land where the dreamer goes.
Lay your head on Mother’s Earth’s breast
And rest a while from your waking quest.

Thank you for the advice Belle. This was the message that
I needed to hear today. I need some sleep, and some
rest ... you are the doctor. Great poetry!!!

Utterly lovely and soothing, ma Belle...I think I'll take the images you evoke and go to rest a bit in the shade of the old oak tree.

La Belle you write such beautiful words. Dreams can be so wonderful making it hard for us to want to wake up from them. The picture goes very nicely with your write. Thank you for sharing.
