Summer had passed and Autumn was gone,
February’s snow lay deep upon the ground.
She oft felt she could not bear to live on
when the Moor was no where to be found.
The Laird was gone to wage war once again
with the brutality he loved best to unleash
He would return, The Lady knew not when
but when he did there would be no peace.
For her time drew nigh, she felt the babe
growing stronger with each day that passed
A daughter or son, nothing could ever save
her from a fate that would be cruel and fast.
There would be no pity for playing the whore
Exiled or executed, she’d be a Lady no more.
The birth pangs came with a fierce fury.
She bit a rope to prevent each loud scream.
The tiny child in her womb was in no hurry
to enter this world of sorrow, so it seemed.
She labored on in her anguish into the night
as her maid wiped the sweat from her brow.
She felt she could not survive until the light.
To face the angry Laird she knew not how.
She heard the horses in the courtyard below
and knew her husband had returned at last.
Perhaps she’d die and he would never know
of the unborn secret conceived in her past.
Heavy footsteps fell at The Lady’s door….
she was doomed, she could hide it no more!
Belle, your writing has always been upper crust. And yet, with each new rendering I am amazed at how you raise the bar once more. Emotion springs forth from each line my dear friend. I bid you love and peace. Jon Michael

You have found your soul within these poems you have been writing, Belle. I have not seen such beauty within your words before. I know there was beauty there, yes I know, maybe it was just that I wasn't able to see it in the readings, but these three poems have touched me deeply, and I feel they have been released from your pen to a grateful world as an escape, relief, whatever word you might find to use. I am truly captivated.
