White knights in shining armor
Glisten and stay sanitary
Between the covers of books;
Saving fair maidens and slaying dragons
Are all in a day's adventures.
Their armor stays spotless.
No flaws on close inspection.
But real dragons have sharp teeth,
And non-fantasy knights may be off-white,
With dented armor.
Dragon slaying is hard work.
I can be your white knight
And you my fair maiden;
But only if we each have the courage,
And understanding,
To lay our fairy tale stories
On the night stand,
And look at each other up close,
With open eyes.
Those dents in our armor have a beauty of their own
When viewed with proper grace.
Some of them cost us dearly.
I see the past scars of dragons you have faced,
And you see mine.
There is a quiet understanding between those who have faced dragons
And triumphed.
Untarnished armor must first be tested in the arena
To prove its worth.
Our paths chanced to cross
During our separate quests for fulfillment.
We chose to join forces.
Our separate roads became one.
A time for testing.
Each learning about the other.
Our strengths may lie in different areas;
Perhaps the blending will prove more powerful than its parts.
Only time will tell.
