We Dance Alone
We both know what is happening
Where this is going
No need to rush
This is our time.
It’s long past midnight.
Still the unbearable swelter
Soft jazz on the radio
I stand—take your hand
Even in the dim candlelight
I can see your form
Through soaked cotton
Now transparent.
You catch me starring
I look away
You feign a frown
And then you grin.
We join our hands
And gently move to the music.
I can feel your warmth
Smell the wine on your breath.
My heart is pounding
You excite me still
My hands on your shoulders
And through your damp curls.
You hold me tight
With all of your strength
As though you fear
My imminent departure.
I’m surprised to find
A tear trails your cheek.
I wipe it
You hold my hand to your face.
Then you move my touch
To your breasts
My eyes fix on your eyes
Deep-lingering-meaningful.
We say nothing—but hear everything
An inept fan can not chill
Our now bare bodies.
Then a subtle kiss.
I hear bells
Ignore it—the phone
This is our night
We dance alone.
