WHEN
GOD
BECAME
a BABY b by David Clure
In my ear a lonely siren sounds
a steady, single note ;
a dream more lovely than
one ever seen or wrote . . .
Snow flakes winding down
from storage places 'neath the Crystal Sea ;
My breath floating upwards . . .
Condensation's reverie
Rainbow promises like tree lights
draw me back to yesteryears ;
to Christmas eves in tiny churches
mute and w i d e - eyed wondering stares .
When what was inside ribboned boxes
only lasted till we knew . . .
When hugs and kisses lasted longer
than modern toys of these days do
When GOD became a baby --
an ancient promise kept --
Reality intruded as
the infant Jesus slept .
For When God became a baby,
He died for sinners all
For everyone admitting need
who only upon Jesus, call .
