Nothing Worse

We all have stories in our heads that pop up now and again.
It gives us joy at remembering what it was like back then.
These memories become so precious & cherished days of the past.
We keep them in a special place, in hopes those memories last.

But when we get older, those memories can get confused.
Some of them you still have, others you sometimes lose.
When you get older, those memories help so much.
They fill a void in your heart, they add a special touch.

So why are they taken from you when you need them the most?
Why can’t you remember them so you can talk about and boast?
It has the name of Alzheimer’s or Dementia which has an awful sound.
It takes away the person you are when others come around.

Old age wouldn’t be so terrible if it would let you keep your past.
So you could draw on it daily & your loneliness wouldn’t last.
There are so many diseases that are more painful that’s true .
But there is nothing worse or more frightening  in life, than losing you.

...and there are those long corridors, where no Alzheimer or Dementia but just feeble old age keeps them quite and down, waiting for that final call from God among the indifferent world around them.
Knowing, waiting, that can be named nothing worse...
A compassionate poem.

Nothing worse than losing memory; that must be horrible! Alzheimers or any other dementia-causing illness/disease is cruel! I pray I never lose my memory!

Powerful pen you've written, Bonnie; very well done! BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

So true my friend, if all else goes on this body as I age, I pray that my mind stays strong. I had a long time family friend whom passed away last year, he was 96 a minister, husband, community pillar he died with his mind being as sharp as it was when he was twenty. He could quote scriptures from the bible, give wonderful wise advice, and attend church every Sunday. He said one should always keep their mind in good shape by reading, writing, socializing, and attending church! Great advice that I try to follow, he gave one hope through his wonderful life and testimony. Great write my friend!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

I can't imagine, either, Bonnie - dementia and Alzheimers are cruel diseases. Excellently penned, the catagory is spot ON.
