The Sun Will Never Rise

The candle grows dim
spitting living sparks
that die before they
reach their inevitable demise
The night breathes frost
upon burning warm lips,
upon eyes unseeing.
A mind transfixed
in ponderous haze.
contemplating
the darkness that infests
the depths of it's despair.
And every breath drawn in
exhales in another sigh
of wistful dreaming
wistfully waiting,
but the sun will never rise
So I walk alone through the city
I stare at my shoes - covered with filth
and I feel the rain coming
in misty sheets
to douse the flames
that immolate my thoughts.
Your words emblazoned on my eyelids
an epitaph written in cinders
by your hand - in our blood.
I cannot speak
the silence says enough for me
but my lungs are burning
to push forth the scream
that is knotting itself up inside
and yearning to be released.
Every moment, every beat
that palpitates within
the circle of this hour
in the darkness and wintery air
is mine alone.
I sink into the night's velvet embrace
comforting in it's indifference
traversing every narrow path
that unfolds before my feet
In this meandering reverie.
thoughts zing past consciousness
like sleet falling to the pavement
on this silvered grey morning
that the dawn reaches greedily towards
with gore-slick, burning tendrils
but can never reach
'Fore I alone breathe this moment,
I alone will hold it for eternity
alone I will shudder in the last
frozen moment
and feel the stinging tear slide
'fore the sun will never rise...

Virago, I don't know why but this poem brings forth the title of the song: "Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places." I am sure you will get it all right as you go along. Expecting great things to come from your pen. (prove me right) Keep writing (and let the sunshine in) Bill
