Gilded Mountain

How bright the shine
Those landmarks of sports-glitter
Bulldozed conversions of Nature’s rock to the sea
Affording luminous rail and highway
Back to a summit where hubris adornment
Becomes a ruler’s moment in history

In its wake
Villages sacrificed
Mobility confined
Modern slavery made stealth

Old men and women
Stand idle and bewildered
Dust at their feet
Beneficial snow distant

Weed-choked property
Stands emblematic
Simple living of humble lineage
Reduced to imposed exile

Little passage
Holds captive
Crouching men on dirt porches
Hopeless women peering
From glassless windows
All for the glory of five intertwined circles

What cost justifies the price?
What manner of inhumanity to man
Must we continue to endure?

Strange befits this experience
Where a world looks for what matters
Atop the icy lies buried beneath

Today
Putin’s gilded mountain
Tomorrow
Another czarist vestige

And then there's Walmart! We are so ignorant of our earthbound neighbors that even a blink of a look into their backyards would tell us more than we could ever read. In most cases it is quite the opposite, which is your point I presume. The Games have always been emblematic of the potential for world peace. The fact that other governments should want to host such an event seems somewhat optimistic, all things considered, but I digress... where there is money to be made... M.True

Old habits seem to die hard in Russia. I don't really see this any different from the choices the Olympic committee makes or the glamour that is placed on the games over access to exercise and sports for everyone. Having sat in on Olympic trials with a friend competing, I saw how difficult it was to move up the ladder to make the team. It seems very strange see Americans on distant tropical island country teams for the winter Olympics. Some win, some lose. It's the nature of the game.

What with Russia's population declining, Mr. Putin would do well to heed what Mr. Ivanovich said about, "attention to families with many children."

“The Olympics are the Olympics,” he said, shrugging. “They already stole three-quarters of what they spent on it.” I enjoy the issues you hone in on for your writing, Odin. It is good to read them again. My favorite line in this is: "Hopeless women peering
From glassless windows /All for the glory of five intertwined circles" Your observances, in the way you write them, stick in the teeth just right, Odin.

A news commentator was excited about the express train to see
the outer skirts of Sochi. Well I was all set. Yeah, less than
a minute of blur. So right on the "Gilded Mountain."

I have never been a fan of the damned Olympics. Wherever they take place the "little" people are sacrificed. And in Russia I am positive they are even more so.
