Handmade Maps
by Odin Roark
How gentle the flow has become,
this back-of-the-hand tributary,
maturity’s telltale relief map,
born of dedicated inlets and outlets,
swelling with the passage of weathered time,
revealing topography of life’s abiding current,
patiently tending life/death’s cyclic resolve,
tomorrow’s iteration of birth in perpetuity.
the next tranquil drift becoming.
How simple and complete…
for now.
I wish I could show you a picture of my hands. At my age, they should be showing the dreaded "age" spots mentioned by Ed. They don't. In fact, they are pink and glowing with little or no veins showing, perfect nails, and smooth, wrinkle free skin. Like a teenager's hands who haven't been out in the sun. It amazes me.
I chalk it up to "lack of wear and tear," because they have been paralyzed for 50 years and have not recently been used to do any heavy work, although they used to and have been used to karate chop frozen vegetables in the bag until they bled, write and type incessantly, pull weeds, run all sorts of machinery, hold the steering wheel for 10 or 12 hours straight, get burned numerous times on hot coffee cups, bacon grease, and burners because I couldn't feel them burning, nicked and cut many times. In other words, my hands lead a busy life like everyone else's.
Ron
well done
