Live It Or Ditch It

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Putting years behind you tends to cause some leaning toward regrets and fear, but "Live it, or ditch it," was my pappy's shout-out to me about living, and it makes a lot more sense with the years passing and seemingly nothing but blue sky ahead.

Live It Or Ditch It
by Odin Roark

How stealth its presence
Forever concealing surprises.
Reasons of compassion or malice?

My fear or lack of,
Justified or not,
Begs explanation
“I suggest a ‘Hi’ for starters
Having never been formally introduced.

“You know,
Though we gaze at each other over the neighborly fence,
We’ve kinda brought this on ourselves,
The estrangement, I mean.

“We’re like a brotherly
Reality meets imagination moment,
That ‘deer in the headlights’ kind of thing,
And we just stare speechless and embarrassed
As some pretense of serious distraction,
Like pigeons fighting over a French fry.
Or pall bearers hefting
A flower-laden casket
Into a hearse about to
Deliver another future passing
Destroys the moment.

You know what I mean?

It’s all so exhausting,
This waiting around for the future,
When there’s so much good air hangin’ now
Just dyin’ to get sucked up…
Right now.

So…

Like I said,”Hi. Probably time
We got acquainted, eh?”

It is sad that intimacy, even in casual interactions, has to take on some sexual or monetary nuance. We are learning to protect our privacy at the cost of everyday inter-personal relationships. Delicious insights... M.True

We’ve kinda brought this on ourselves,
The estrangement, I mean.

We certainly have, and we've been doing it for centuries.

Seems a trend in this society evolved around us. Isolation. I have a brother-in-law who's a school janitor in a small town high school. He tells me that he doesn't see teenagers pairing up anymore on a semi-permanent basis. Where they used to hold hands and show other outward signs of affection, Now they all have these elaborate internal lives with their cell phones, only indulging in hook-ups. Actual verbal conversation seems to be an outmoded concept these days. My mother-in-law was with some of her grandsons for lunch. She said nobody talked. They stared intently at their cell phones and had finger conversation with who-knows-who.

I believe our modern society is in the process of some kind of change, not seen till now and probably not seen before. A private and internalized culture of isolation? I'm really not sure what to call this evolving phenomenon.

I think you've touched a little on this with your poem Odin. Bob

There is that phrase I've heard, "Let's have lunch sometime." It seems like "sometime" never comes unless I consciously follow up very soon with a specific time and place to have lunch. That failing, I suggest an alternative. In suburbia where I live, in retirement, there is little chance for serendipity to happen--I have to make it happen. That's why I make it a point to drop in on old friends and suck up some of their air once in a while.

And, when I'm in waiting rooms for a long wait, I pry people away from their books, the TV, or their cell phone to have been honest-to-goodness conversation.
