Acerbic Sugar Revisited

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

For all us delusional and refusing-to-grow-up-adults, sometimes a little levity coated skepticism makes the risk of more self-determined experience palatable. Cynical I'm not. Reality based I am, maybe because I’ve learned: There’s always a choice. Some of us just need to be awakened.

Acerbic Sugar Revisited
by Odin Roark

Cotton Candy Happy
swirling in its cocoon of anticipation,
coloring itself to fit ambition’s mood,
served up by numerous three-hundred pound testimonials
to get us thinking… Happy.

The buy-in is short lived, though.

This euphoria of mind,
today's relationship with work,
mate,
family,
all looking forward to
tomorrow's big deal,
the “Who you know” capture…
all part of next week’s surprise disappointment.

We all know…

BFFs to start,
jock buddies "On the Road" for some,
executive "Mad Men" washroom rewards for others,
and always gold watches for time served,
or baby showers for those who made the catch.

Sadly…

Most tomorrows become regrettable mistakes,
dumpsters of yesterday’s limpid cones,
once swirled with fluffy sugar,
garnering sweetness of smiles,
adulthood’s personification of childhood naiveté,
the clinging we can’t let go of.

The wise suggest
accept the bed we’ve made,
sleep in it.
After all,
it’s all just a carnival of horrors we created
as a twisted sugar-sweet-laced-happy-happy.

Ya gotta LOL
or weep,
or…

It's strange, but we can blame it on the burning of coal and various forms of crude oil pumped from the ground. The power of this millions of years of carbon investment burned up in 250 years has made us wealthy beyond our means, allowing us to slip slide into destructive behavior fueled by sugar… The sweet tooth of our desire.

Ninety percent of the population would not understand what your poem means. And that is the problem… 90% of the problem.

Sugar is a great image for our postmodern culture. Sugar is so close to the glucose the energizes our bodies that it's absorbed almost instantly. It's another example of instant-gratification syndrome which is the dominate attitude nowadays. Online we expect something to happen quickly after every click or finger tap. Trouble is the truly good things in life require way more effort and far longer wait times.
