I was reading just yesterday in National Geographic the scope of the problem in Syria. I realize that it's happening also in South Sudan, Yemen, and other places as well. Most of the people are the elderly, women and children because most of the men and boys of fighting age stay behind to fight.

While it is tragic that so many are trying to cross the Mediterranean to safety and fail, according to the article, Turkey, while greatly stressed, as opened its borders and calls the people coming from Syria and Iraq "guests." Once in camps and villages, the women are subjected to rape, proposals of marriage (married Moslems seeking multiple wives) and many other indignities.

Death, is sometimes, the only real escape.

I live with a refugee who was given asylum and is now a US citizen after waiting 17 years through the process of becoming a citizen through her asylum status.

Odd that 'refugee' and 'immigrant' have such similar meanings, yet different connotations. You've connected the desperation they hold in common. All too often, as you say, Death is the generous one, the host of last resort.
