Me Me Me Attraction

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As a global society under self-siege, we seem to be veering toward a species determined to annihilate itself through any number of toxic contaminates, both mental and physical, this piece of prosetry is most assuredly depicting but the tip of the iceberg…submerged beneath an icy narcissistic collective.

Poem Artwork
Me Me Me Attraction
by Odin Roark

Beware of blinding light.
Bigger.
Louder.
In your face light.
Such becomes fractals of fear.

Me Me Me fantasists
Rush to be enticed by
A mall's giant facilities.
Larger portions,
Shimmering seductions
Melding senses into blurs
Where dreamers grab sustenance
As synchronized musical fountains
Make food court dining an art.

But like the Hopper Nighthawk diner,
Such a menu does little to feed
Insatiable appetites of loneliness.
Ravenous wanderers remain famished,
Reduced to stuporous gaze.

Accompanying the surreal installation
Ceiling speakers amidst persuasive colored clouds
Deliver psycho-form-fitting-consumption-hymns
Permeating what little consciousness roams below,
Imbuing gluttonous egos with chameleon emptiness.

Anxious to advance,
A mixed-gender group of adolescent adults
Engulfed in perfumed cosmetic counter ambiance
Debate their man-man fragrance choice,
Or
Stare at their mirrored images,
Applying frosted lip gloss identification,
This week's Me Me Me attraction,
Hopper-hopefuls of tomorrow
Testing another choice in
Luminary isolation…
Fear's matrix.

Only a figment of our male/female imagination?

Doubtful.

Keeping up with the Joneses. Giant sale, 50% off. Bigger is better. Growth is our most important product. It's out of style. I guess we'll have to renovate and bring up to date. They don't build it to last anymore. Time to update. A marriage's success is measured by how much we spend for the wedding, and of course, the wedding ring. So everybody, let's supersize and run up our medical bills. A nip here, a tuck there. Bling is the thing.

Have we had enough already? No, every conception has a right to life and we need more people because 7 billion is not enough for heaven to hold. We need more to make all that stuff for us.

Under siege indeed! Scientists have announced a new unit to accurately measure narcissism: N=S/h... The selfie per hour. (-: The premise of this work; a reality/pandemic you can laugh or cry about. Depending on the day I do both. Powerful work, Odinsan. Well cogitated and imaged. Enjoyed. r

Doubtful? No! Of a certainty, yes! You see it there in the mall, I see it here, everywhere, even in the classroom. Ego aggressive drivers pushing lesser mortals (like me) to the side on the roads, dead-head youth (males and females alike) stare emptily into their cell phones, the females flicking the screen with lacquered nails. Even in the classroom, I get empty stares. Yesterday, we were talking ideas getting reading to have them write an essay. I had asked the students to bring their ideas to class. Do you have any ideas, I asked one dull faced girl heavily made up and draped in black. "No," she said assertively, like it was a badge of honor. I quickly backed away in horror, not wishing to get further involved. Your language in this poem has the power of struck gongs: "glutinous egos, stuporous gaze" (I know that) and chameleon emptiness (I've seen that too time and again). You have nailed it here and as you say, you have only chipped at the tip of the iceberg. You have got a few more poems to go, even to make a dent. John

I agree completely. Still, it was a special cool summer night not long ago, while standing along the railing outside the Belagio Hotel watching the synchronized water display as Sinatra sang "Start spreadin' the news, I'm leavin' today, I want to be a part of it, New York, New York..." With my lady, of course. Good sustenance.
