Identity in a complex society is becoming more difficult for many, given the temporary sense of what is real at the moment so often revealing itself as a fraudulent effort by someone’s or institutional entity’s means of keeping one powerless. (Image by Petri Damsten)

Becoming
by Odin Roark
How many become the words they read,
the chapter and verse of another’s perception,
the plot and characters forged from another’s experience?
How clever,
this trickery we play with our brains,
this escape we readily subscribe to,
this acquired destiny of a story,
but not our own.
Yet…
For many,
the world of books
becomes their primary resource for understanding,
be it one’s own entrapment in fantasy,
or one’s gleaning an epiphany about their personal being.
Such is revealing time spent.
But…
What a travesty we feel
when witnessing the often butchered facsimile of a cherished book,
falling into the abyss of profiteering fostered by cinema and television.
For readers,
the closing of our eyes,
the spreading of our arms,
courageously walking the plank of daring discovery,
provides a special contentment with ourselves,
with knowing a truth,
the book’s integrity,
the reader’s empowerment,
the power of imagination revealing itself as a gift.
For the fortunate who find reading a privilege…
Such renders realize multiple choices:
Are we becoming who we are,
who we choose not to be,
or who we thoughtfully aspire to echo to others?
I have found that many of the classics have been turned into farces by moneygrubbing moviemakers with the same formula, mostly shock and violence to create a movie world of constant sequels that get worse as they exaggerate more and more what the original author intended. Television is the same; making sure that at the end of every sequence there is some suspense to get the viewer to come back and keep the ratings up. Lately, however, I've noticed that some dramas on television are getting quite good. However, they do tend to have, “another season,” that starts to deteriorate. Fargo, the TV series, so far, goes against that trend.

Certain books do that for me. And they do so quite well. Certain authors have illuminated the direction I've walked in my entire life. But still, in a vaster concentric, I realize that the authors/originators of those books/insights are only one echo of a much greater reality that none of us can truly (or fully) understand presently. Such is the role some of us play as authors and poets. Enjoyed this. Clearly and univocally presented. Peace to you...
