Fear Addiction

Exploring once again a societal malaise that, like it or not, continually portends permanence. (Image by Eleanore V. Porter)

Fear Addiction
by Odin Roark

Fear is but a blip in time and space,
like footsteps floating above the sand
beneath a sometimes overwhelming eclipse.

Tiny grains of buried discomfort
patiently await tentative steps,
aware grounding may never come,
for precious few regain sound footing.

For those with balance revived,
darkness is hopefully removed.

Regrettably for most,
careless anxiety bodes habit,
even as the perpetual passage of shadow,
aware of precarious traction,
makes apparent its cyclic custom
across and within our forever hourglass.

Soon…

Another rotation begins.

The clock resets.

Another interval commences.

Time fears not.

Time waits not.

Time is.

This cup of fear, clear, invisible, a diabolical offering to all who would thirst. Is time truly the prison gate? Do we have any say in the coming in or going out? You may well be tiptoing past the truth of it...

Each new generation seems to have to learn fear beyond the basic baby fears of loud noises and falling. The societal malaise of fear in this country seems to stem from 9/11 and not from building heavily on coasts that are repeatedly battered by hurricanes and tropical storms.

It is interesting to read that elementary school teachers have trouble relating 9/11 to their children who were born after the tragic event snowballed in fear of nearly everything that happens in the news far away as though it is happening in our own neighborhood.

Hopefully like your poem portends, we will forget our fears with time.

at large, time always works against us all to be our main deterrent opponent in all and everything right after birth, even earlier. . . A greatly completed poem. Cheers, alex

Like adrenalin junkies, we grasp anxieties to sustain us, to fill the void where emptiness lives - little realizing that emptiness, our inner nothingness is the original perfection. Thus our link to chaos, the universe, to life and time. Oddly this poem reminds me of riding in the vast back seat of a grand old Packard with my brother and sister. I want to yell, 'Mommy, he touched me. Make him stop."

Fear is a timely topic as many people suffer from fears of one kind or another. My fears tend to be very specific that I have tried to fly into the face of over the year. Fear of speaking in public (I have gratefully overcome). Two common fears I have never suffered from: Fear of change (I embrace it) and fear of the unknown (I love it). Your poem has set me thinking, which is what a good poem should do. Thanks. John

Telling it like it is, Odin. Took me many years to beat down the fears which owned me. People use fear as some sort of honor, fear this, fear that. It can destroy your thought perspective.
