Flat Screen Opiates

For those who occasionally watch TV programs of quality, there must be a frustration to discover they’re harder and harder to find.

Flat Screen Opiates
by Odin Roark

“Step right up folks!”

To a world of scrambled brain escapes and trivia sight and sound,
a place where only the apathetic and lonely dwell for endless hours,
cozying up to the Shopping Channel and the ubiquitous reality show world,
there is questionable hope.

Glazed eyes wander aimlessly across thirty-eight inches of two-dimensional mirages after another looking for the enigmatic oasis-high to make them feel of worth,
ultimately immersing their bloodshot eyes into Find A Mate or late-night infomercials for their last fix.

What is it that lures so many to inactivity,
where cells lie dormant and synapse movement ceases?

Is it the delusional promises from the soapboxes
that load the thoughtless into a Metropolis assembly line
of close arteries and intellectual atrophy?

Such beckons the view of a make-believe world,
a momentary life for the pretenders,
a never ending hypnotic pain killer for the masses,
the inevitable lethargy for the unconscious wannabes.

“But, wait. Call us today and you can receive not one, but two…”

“Can’t wait for next weeks reality view, tune into…

“By popular demand, we’re offering…"

We have become a numbed down society made up of sound bites, reality shows that have nothing in common with reality, more commercials than programming, and of course "tweets". It's even harder to find fair and balanced news, Also the "fake news" that people are so ready to believe, and are so easily duped. And that's why I watch very little tv. A well expressed write.

the Japanese, for example, have neither time nor strength to watch TV regularly, but what the broadcast they have in Japan is simply another word of quality. How NHK shoots documentary, it's just amazing. . . to my mind, this piece is a relevant but quite a narrow vision on the tech miracle, Odin-san ;)) Cheers, alex

Seems there is something to consume for every level of mentality. No matter what kind of job needs to be done there is always someone to do it. Many see and experience the world, and form their opinions, watching TV. That's scary to me. I'm of a mind that TV is better and worse than it's ever been. But who has the time to sort through all the caca to find a gem. I sure don't. An edgy cosmopolitan statement, Odinsan. Effective title too.
Peace... r

Ah yes, how true. We live in the world of TV land, but I am far away from the escapade, here in the desert, where we have but sagebrush and dustbugs, and that is bad enough. John

If only the masses would take their frustrations out on the flat screen and not in the voting booth where their self-diagnoses and witchcraft medicines is much worse than the malady.

Saw dust for brains? Perhaps a visit to the Wizard of Oz? I don't get it. Folks like this have lost the "talent" of conversation and are oblivious to what is really going on........but my frustration could take pages to vent. Fabulous write, Odin.

Love ya!

Jane
