Mirage's Ill Promises

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today, it is arguable that the world’s delusional addiction will continue to vanquish reality’s purpose until we awaken.

Poem Artwork
Mirage’s Ill Promises
by Odin Roark

How rapid our collection,
from nasty medicines
cloaked with mother’s smile,
to spoonfuls upon mouthfuls,
handfuls of promises by the bucketful,
filling irony’s repetitive history
upon our shoulders.

How innocent they approach
these mirages promises,
where unfortunately,
the certainty of rest and peace
evaporates like vanishing rabbits in a hat.

Life’s landscape…

A succession of peaks and valleys.
A parent’s belief.
A child’s trust.
A teacher’s urging.
A boss’s mind-game.
A relationship’s oasis.

Eventually…

The undulating future flattens,
erosion’s desert wind catches up.
The parched soul forgets thirst,
realizes that which weighs down his/her back
has made the him/her but a pack-horse
for the next generation.

Nodding exhaustion’s acquiescence,
today’s illusion swirls upward,
always moving the sands of the past,
readily making way for tomorrow’s footprints.

For the fortunate…

Insight makes light the endless dunes of burden,
revealing a path paved with perception,
rousing the traveler from a dream,
to one anxiously waiting to awaken.

Thoughts crossed my mind that may not coincide with your poetic expression. But I immediately thought of our soon obsession with virtual reality. Where we will no longer be required to live in the real world but in any world of our choosing. Thus we will lose our grounding altogether.

Second I thought of the participants in Shark Tank. So many products and services that are not really necessities of life, but are frivolous moneymaking schemes that only can exist when people have spending money to squander.

But I see more and reading the entire poem. Once again, a transition through life to a place that is not very welcome--old age.

Footprints in the sand don't last long, but then again, the sand itself makes ready "for tomorrow's footprints". How true. The desert reflects what no one seems to know. John
