Bed Puzzles
We make'em,
but won't lie in'em.
From "clean your room" time
to military "bounce a dime" time,
beds cling to us,
or,
we cling to our beds.
Some attach a bed to everything.
The "reckless" Bunk.
The "get acquainted" Queen.
The "power play" King.
The "narcissist" Four-poster.
The "rulership" Canopy.
Romantic, eh?
And oh how careful we choose our trade-ins.
Growing up.
Growing down.
Coming of age.
Gaining on age.
Running from age.
AGE.
So
Even though beds are about
pulling the sheets taut,
fluffing those down pillows airy,
flapping and shaking that comforter protective,
truth be told,
most of us but concede to lying in'em
Our bed?
Someone else's bed?
Might some of us never find out?

Up until recently, I didn't put much interest in beds and would lie in any that were available for the time that I would sleep. But, circumstances as they are, my bed has become a subject of much discussion and concern… Especially if I ever become the most unwanted, "bedridden." Still, for many years, I have been unable to get into bed or get out of bed without the help of others. And, in spite of their supposedly superiority, I have rejected (after trying) two hospital beds because they are not as utilitarian as my basic Spartan twin of 35 years.
And metaphorically, the expression, "We have made our bed and must lie in it," is so apropos for the current situation in this country where to be both economically and physically "safe and secure" seem to be backfiring and we have to live with it--our bad decisions about what we are about.
