Poem Artwork
Night’s Comforting Hum

Bashful brook running beside my wilderness retreat
Sharing liquid melodies you hum
For insomniac creatures like me.

Last night…

In my weariness I was of thirst,
Wandered to your side,
Drank of your moon’s reflection,
Saw oceans of cloudless skies,
Felt redemptive forgiveness could be mine.

I listened to your trickling melody for one moment,
Heeded the comfort offered beneath your water’s flow,
Heard the dewdrops of dawn dropping all around me.

I awaited the warmth of the sun,
And sighed my nocturnal sadness away
Once again anticipating your nightly presence.

For when night cloaks our friendship,
You are my company,
The calming of fear,
The disarming of darkness surrounding my bedroll,
Where swirling unsettled flotsam-baggage of my mind,
Like a mocking whirlpool of stubborn mistakes,
Remains unwilling to drown.

This soul wants so to sleep away the pain.

If only...

A fine (and detailed) description of nature's magic and the mystery of nature's "hum". Love this.

though insomnia is a painful thing, however, it makes us see things in the dark. today is the 13th day of the lunar calendar and the coming full moon assists us in our night vigil. Heavens bless you, Midnight Poet. Cheers, alex

You made me long for nights like this that I remember when camping out in good weather. But then, I did not have a care in the world and did not know I would be ensconced in the swift traffic sounds and light pollution sky with nary a star to guide me out of the madness.

And then I read the last line and you took me to a whole different story…

Understood and completely relate. When night befalls us down here amid the Louisiana swamp there seems to be a great "whoosh" as night creatures come out to play . . . er . . . or go about their business of hunting some creature for a night meal. It is a grand thing to observe from the safety in the comfort of your vehicle.

This poem is sooooo beautiful. Camping in the Alleghenies offers sounds of the large streams and the waterfalls, the scurrying critters of the night serenaded by the owls. Listening to them at night makes for a concert like no other! It's just washing my hair in those mountain rivers that give me a temporary brain freeze! 'Enjoyed!!

Love ya!

Jane
