When staring upward, we sometimes forget how valuable our nighttime fantasized perspective aids our everyday reality.

Mystic Fly Casting Revisited

Once the boy made fly hooks
after school for ten cents a hook.
Big money then
for big dreams... then.

Now the boy a vintage man
has only nocturnal dreams
needing little money... now.

How prescient he thinks,
staring up at ceiling images,
casting his line out into the dark,
like hooks needing to catch new dreams,
the ones swimming freely for the taking,
his heart the willing bait.

Night after night,
his inner feelings a tether,
floats beyond his past
until unknown stars
blink their infinite welcome.

His spirit takes heed,
the line reeled out to its end,
the hook’s purposeful drift
bringing a sigh to his throat.

Up there,
the stars, like other fishermen of providence,
pepper his longing with their inherent sparkle,
like the surface of a great lake reflecting its surroundings,
an invitation to join in their celestial campfire,
allowing the embers and flames to ignite dreams never waned,
even when often flickering of a dim flame.

Is it the pumping heart that keeps dancing
the lure that makes the pull-in so rewarding,
the catch and release so needed
in keeping alive the dreams?

It’s late…

His eyes flutter,
as the hook, now a dangling shadow in the abyss,
finds respite ‘til another night.

A perplexed moth and spider,
gaze down from the ceiling.
The man recedes into sleep,
a mystical abandonment enveloping
his smiling eyelids.

Ahhhhhh.......the dream goes on and I like the way it's going, Odin! Some fishing folks have made big bucks making those fly hooks! Still casting after all these years and loving it, eh? "his smiling eyelids.".....so nice!

Love ya!

I've never tried Fly Casting, but it sounds like fun based on your write, nice job. I especially love the picture, well done.

Cheers,
Dan

"allowing the embers and flames to ignite dreams never waned,"

The above line is the catalyst which gives the man his dreams and carries him into a world he envisions, but never can connect to when he is awake. His dreams can only come alive within his nocturnal dreams.

Your imagery is fantastic. You make me ashamed that the fly tying kit I won on TV playing "Quick on the Draw" for afternoon housewives was so neglected that I only made a handful of flies before giving up… Never catching a single fish with any of them. My excuse is that it required flashy metal to attract game fish in our muddy waters and we had to drive too far for too little to catch trout in Wisconsin.

But your prosetry this time is much more profound. In between the frenetic activity of your brain during the day and the peaceful (or fretful) of the night, you are casting out your lures of enticement to a starry sky invented in the ceiling of imagination to catch those prize fishes in a sea of many. Bravo!

Ron
