Naked Truth

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Whether the choice is to be a Doctor without Borders, a case worker in a hostile inner-city, or a volunteer for those seeking asylum, one can’t say enough about these selfless heroes of truth trying to be heard and respected.

Naked Truth

To give up,
suffer defeat.

Or…

To surrender,
giving oneself
to the integrity of survival.

Such is our choice of destiny,
of willingness to live
embracing pain,
realizing pleasure,
accepting paradox.
our potential capable of reaching

beyond the obvious.

Yet…

So many,
the woman on the bus,
the homeless astride his belongings-bag,
the maimed veterans,

those seeking asylum,
the wounded innocents
existing without respect for their cause.

Much of humanity is shamelessly ignorant,
living with consciousness without principles,
hiding in secure bubbles of defense,
insulated by power and wealth from the harsh realities

impacting the majority.

Fearful,
some still give of themselves,
immerse into a strangers’ world of hopelessness,
discover the often-elusive core of humanity,
where survival relies on trusting,
void of discrimination and bigotry,
where to be a volunteer is both revered,
and feared.

To give up,
or surrender.

To remain in delusional security,
or break away from fear’s seduction,
venture outside the tenuous safety

of provided captivity, not shelter,
imprisoning who we might be,
who we might have been.
who we might become.

So, go heroes,
where truth’s nakedness
knows not hiding,

providing those with conscience,

an alternative to merely selfish comfort.

Knowing many of the volunteers at a homeless shelter, I am sure they will all love this. The next time it's my turn, I'm putting this poem on the bulletin board there! "Easy To Be Hard" comes to mind from "Hair".

Love ya!

I remain very grateful to The Salvation Army who, when I walked the uncaring streets of this great land. Many a time I wandered those streets penniless, hungry and worn out from my journey that the "Sally" was there for me, to give me shelter for the night, clean clothes, food, making me believe I was somebody. These days I give to that organization whenever I can. I am forever respectful to them.

We have to laud those who volunteer to help the unfortunate. But I believe all those that do and are not delusional, come from a certain confidence that results from overcoming their own discomforts to the point where they are comfortable enough to step out of that comfort for a time and help others. Those that travel to other countries to help are often subject to the brutality of where they go.

That image: Sonny and Ree in 'Winters Bone'. We used to adore that girl. Her natural talent and beauty. Something happened though. Something always happens to twist the good. My poem 'Her Hollywood Stardom' was in-truth written about her. Didn't want to use her picture, though. Didn't want to disrespect her. In this instance it's a perfectly chosen image (IMO) to illustrate your thoughts in this fine piece. Well done. Peace... r
