Evil Martyrs

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

What a new year coming has to offer: murderous brutality raging in Yemen, as well as in Syria and on our own soil at the Mexican border. One is left thinking the fury of animosity seems to be without solution, save the fairytale dream of Middle Eastern tribal culture having a divine epiphany. Many of us are left wondering how the maxim of species' decency, "Do the right thing,” as proffered by Socrates, went off the tracks. With plenty of blame to go around, it’s even too big to place all the blame on our administration. (Painting by Zdzisław Beksiński.)

Evil’s Martyrs

Vultures in white feathered masquerade
Demonstrating,
Propagating,
Disseminating,
Relegating,
But must we tolerate?

For who among us has not wished a cause,
Hoped of peace,
Gazed upon our often-rudderless lives

And wondered…

Might I find that purpose?

Might an olive branch occupy my grip?

Might I do and be of worth to peace?

Most of us have,
For denying the small innate voice of reason within
Makes but the scream of logic louder and more painful.

We have most likely
Held our breath as we faced
The other 21st century outhouse of
Ignorance-fueled hate,
Complimented with Bio-enraged bigotry,
Inviting our hard-wired inner self
To step on in as the door is slammed,
Its iconic half-moon craving for air,
Sealed by duplicitous stuffing of
Political and moral pundit speak,
The thick denial of a globe’s climate change.

Sadly

Hate and ignorance mongering would have us
Allow them their directional will,
To maintain and service our moral compass,
Misdirect the dervish impetus of reason.

For whether we approve or not,
Like putrefactive tanks of yore,
Rectitude’s needle-guided direction
Will most likely be replaced
With another as yet unlabeled echo infused cauldron,
An evolved twisted vortex of darkness,
Gorging on the failings of peace,
As the wafting stench of ignorant sepsis
Rises from the ever so close edge of man’s odious abyss.

How insidious and stealth
These self-proclaimed messengers of evil,
These martyrs of hate disguised as saints.

For any of us to lose hope is to cave to futility.

No.  Not yet.

There was a time in my life when I felt as if I was hemorrhaging continuously. But it wasn't blood that was leaking out from me, not something that could be imparted back gradually. I discovered that I was losing all hope in the system, the government, and humanity in general. There's only two places you can go when you hit the bottom of the well. Burrow further down into the muck, or reach back up towards the Light. I chose the latter. What's happening on this planet started long before America was founded, or Trump was born. The future of the Earth has already been written. Thank you for sharing honestly and skillfully. Peace... rlc

I agree with Edward... "drawn toward the 'knowing' unknown"—beautiful phrase.
And a great poem, Odin, expressing profound love for the human race in our self-created plight. Thank you for not merely raging against the current administration. As if that would solve anything. We choose our crimes and our hells...but like to blame anyone and everyone else. We all like to think of ourselves as saints...but do our actions reflect love and decency in thought, word, and deed or merely ancient fury?
Plenty of old and young linger in doubt and darkness when a touch of kindness could change their world into light and hope.
Thanks for sharing.

What a poem! But what is the sustaining force that prevents a cave-in?
I cannot find such a force within me. I must look outward toward
the "knowing" unknown where reason and justice find their home, where I am drawn slowly and reassuringly. I am not of this world, but I must stay here and fight until my last breath before reason and justice will allow me a respite.
