Faces Without Choices

This is for those who often consider which expression is truly the “me” at a particular stage of one’s life. (Photo by Gilles)

Poem Artwork

Faces Without Choice

Making the face we get

starts with amoretto cheeks

beneath storybook eyes,

silken strands draped across the brow,

curious noses,

innocent lips.

Upon canvases so pure,

strokes the brush of time,

dipped into the palette of reality,

layering change upon change.

Colors…

Some untainted.

Others muddy.

Drying.

Cracking.

Flaking.

What of these faces

without choice.

One’s personal artwork

now retired to Life’s attic,

propped up on memory’s walls that shelter what was,

when faces knew fewer mirrors,

expressions were for their own sake,

and manufactured masks were only reserved for Halloween.

Mirror, mirror,

on the wall…

Isn't it the truth and can't the truth be cruel, Odin! Well, I find it's a time to set up different priorities. 'Amazing what is done with oil paints and botox these days!

Love ya!

Gives something to the old adage… "Die young and leave a good looking corpse." Some of us can't even aspire to that because we never looked good in a mirror. Surgical enhancement aside, our faces do change clearly like you describe. When I look now I can see those effects taking hold, but others, fortunately, always guess my age to be much younger.

But I'm still standing by my 2003 photograph when I was still a bit photogenic.

. . . who is the foulest of them all. The problem with mirrors is that it shows exactly what it sees with little alteration, "dry, cracking, flaking." That and much more.
