Hirrican Junky Revisted

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With Dorian about to be the weekend news on through Labor Day, felt like revisiting this analogy. Just somthin’ needin’ slammin’. (Enjoyed performing this back in 2004 at a slam session)

Hurricane Junky Revisited

Swirlin’ up a storm of black and white shards

whippin’ up words

slamin’ down stanzas

takin’ life to that place it fights all day

bangin’ noise ‘gainst the wall

Gettin’ life’s attention

that’s my game

levitatin’ empty baggage

takin’ calm’s allusion

way past delusion

over and round illusion

makin’ thunder wait for lightnin’

‘cause that’s how it is

if you’re a hurricane junky

Never no trickle-down birth here

jus’ shakin’ ‘fore the eye-a-the-storm

I’m from womb of all wombs

where contractions hide the screaming

‘midst fluffy white donut guise

mother-pushin’pain it is

if you’re a hurricane junky

Once started

oh lordy

mist of Dick and Jane

gives way to drizzle rain of Catcher in the Rye

later showers swirl round War and Peace

as Infinite Jest hovers

if you’re a hurricane junky

Mother’s know well

their supple thighs

veterans of whip and lash

deliver DNA with no turning back

if you’re a hurricane junky

So if you’re caught in the wake of my flurry

all shite and scared

heart bangin’ heavy

new ventricles panting

eyes needing boarding up

hold tight

think loose

dream open

‘cause maybe

just maybe

my eye will pass over

calm will appear before the storm

But beware when hallucinations vanish

for inside purity of white

lurks black’s counter spinnin’

life don’t get away that easy

if you’re a hurricane junky

Wooshed up in words, I thank you for the wild realization of the fickle ways of the hurricane (and life!). I love it!

Love ya!

Now that was a true whirlwind of words.

This poem blusters along with rhyme and near-rhyme endings that add charm to the piece. The way it is written blows through like the hurricane itself, as it reads like a whirlwind, rapid and with unexpected twists and turns. Love your use of "slang", and literary references make it fun. Just right for the weekend to come! Stay safe!

I was in the Army in 1969, stationed (then) in Fort Benning Georgia, before I went overseas. Hurricane Camille had slammed the gulf coast. Mississippi took a monstrous hit. My company was given temporary duty in Biloxi. They sent us in to maintain order, direct traffic, and to help remove dead bodies from the piles of rubble that used to be beautiful old Victorian homes along the coast. I've never forgotten the devastation, or the smell of death. My brother and his wife live on the east coast in Atlantic Beach Florida now, and my aunt and uncle and cousins live in Jacksonville. Michele and I have been getting updates from 1022 - the weather station - on Cox. The reporting seems to have more meat on the bones. There is a tongue-in-cheek element to your piece that made me smile. Take care. Thanks for sharing. R
