Love's Prehension

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A friend of mine in Germany went to a screening of “La Dolce Vita” recently. I envy his eventful happening, having seen the movie many times. So, somewhat lost in my melancholy, I entertained the thought that many believe that for anyone who has suffered mistakes in relationships, embracing the experience delivers one of life’s most important epistemological lessons: the discernment of fact as opposed to opinion. “Prehension is a part or aspect of the more or less complex whole which is an act of awareness.” -Whitehead- “So, prehension is a ferment of qualitative valuation which need not necessarily be conscious.” For many, like the lead character in La Dolce Vita, “I can’t hear you,” they suffer not realizing Love’s Prehension. Love’s Prehension

As memories continue to fade…

One finds a strange solace in the period of time

Where love and compassion once born
Became two tendering oneness
Duality became passions colliding
Desire was mistaken for love

Never accepting faults
As errors that have enjoined lessons for the future

And now…

With each gust of wind

That has swept through the ruins of minds and hearts
Peace has been created

Allowing tears of regret

To become smiles of hope and trust

For compassion knows no boundaries

Its essence desires only respect

For love’s prehension

I had the good fortune of seeing La Dolce Vita for the first time a few months ago. It certainly was a good lesson of life. Why so many marriages end up in divorce. Like you wrote, desire is not love, and for some, it takes a long time to realize that. Love takes compassion.

I'm not sure about the use of prehension here. For me it means having some knowledge of the future and getting it right. In the case of the tragic figure in La Dolce Vita, he didn't seem to have a clue until it slapped him right in the face.

Being lost in melancholy is something I have much experience with Odinsan. IMO, without knowledge, love, creativity, and discernment, our lives would be a stewpot of shit. It's always amazing to me how alike and different we all are, but how each of us are hardwired to be loved and respected by others. "The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves." Victor Hugo. A thoughtful insight. Well done. Enjoyed. r

Transformations that become possible such as these speak to the power of transcendence in which individuals can transcend their limitations for the greater good. . . and for love. A fine poem indeed on a subject rarely treated.
