Creativity's Masks

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Just a contemplation on the way we poets create our particular reality and how we see ourselves. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Creativity’s Masks

Making the face we get

starts with amoretto cheeks

beneath storybook eyes,

silken strands draped across the brow,

curious noses,

innocent lips.

Upon canvases so pure

strokes the brush of time,

dips into the palette of reality,

layering change upon change.

Colors…

Some untainted,

others muddy.

Drying.

Cracking.

Flaking.

Reality begs,

what of these faces?

Perhaps…

One’s personal artwork

now retired to Life’s attic,

propped up on walls that shelter memories,

when faces knew not mirrors,

expressions were for their own sake,

and manufactured masks were only reserved for make-believe.

Yet…

There may be no end to a poet’s mercurial masking?

Masks are intriguing~~~a touch of mystery. Many people "wear" different ones for different occasions......I like this a lot, Odin!

Love ya!

There are so many ways that we fear. I believe the reason people use models of behavior instead of their own while writing fiction/poetry. The mask isolates the writer in some ways so that one can avoid the fear of failure. The fear of not being good enough or being recognized.

On the other hand, the reality of what you wrote about how the face of everyone changes, some drastically as we age, creating some kind of mask of our countenances that we have never seen before.

This is interesting. Truth be told: My wife and I put on masks as soon as we walk out the front door. Where she and I work, wearing a mask (becoming a character) is mandatory to surviving and remaining sane. As your image seems to illustrate; perhaps the scariest reality is when people take off their masks, and there's nothing behind them. I've known some like that. I'm sure you have too. Truly understanding that we aren't our masks is mandatory to retaining a healthy mind and surviving, especially creatively. For me, original writing is the one uncomplicated safe haven where I can truly be myself, like you. No masks. Just an honest raw nerve. Enjoyed this. Take care... rlc
