My Melting Piano

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- On this weekend of honoring the sacrifice of many a man in war notwithstanding, it is strange for me to be thinking about my grand piano lost in a fire, and in its rather inordinate representation as one of my greatest losses (following that of my parents many years ago). I was struck by the memories of playing the instrument and its ability to lift my spirits--and because the painting of Dali's melting time hung behind it, the two impressions came forth as one. Losing one's prize possession in a house fire, leaves but memories needing to be grounded. (painting by Dali – Persistence of Memory)

My Melting Piano

My melting piano
like liquid clocks of undulating passage atop the branches
     stretching their forever time downward
to shroud the languid buds of Spring's rhapsody.

Will rhythms of youth
      merge with gratefulness
upon the austerity of our symphony's last movement?

Will the luster of ebony
illumine the memory amidst the swirling ashes
where Damper pads desperately work to protect the melodies once mine?

Will the glistening heat of completeness
bring forth yet another incarnation of perpetual motion
a once calm tonality as the seedling of a measure's beginning
now the climax of the ever calm
                            the tremolo of eternal movement?
My melting piano
        glacial resonance
                life with death personified..

I can only imagine the anguish you felt losing something you are so tuned into that you can write so lovingly about it and how it passed in the flame.

On cruises I have had the opportunity to buy Dali paintings like the one you have shown that I always admire. I don't think they were originals that were too expensive for my budget.

In their last years in a rented house, my grandparents suffered a house fire. Inside the house looked normal after the fire. But a telltale sign of the heat was there plastic television set that melted.

The loss of such a possession must be difficult to bear, the only thing that I can think of somewhat akin being the loss of a manuscript which I have done here and there over the years. Hers beautifully rendered in your introspective poem.
