Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…
Standing in line,
Prescription slip in tow,
Why, I wonder?
170
Of shorter stature,
Folded arms across her bosoms,
Mascara needing attention
Yet…
So wanting.
200
Of taller identity
Gripping grocery cart
With toddler squirming
Yet…
So frustrated.
220
Of stockier stature,
Nervously adjusting faded housedress
Eyes darting from well-dressed person to person
Self-consciously flipping bleached hair side to side
Yet…
Allowing old lady to go first
275
Of manly proportions
Sporting a Chief’s t-shirt
Gripping the shoulders of daughter and son
Attempting to remain calm
Urgently needing the prescription ordered
Yet…
Irritability mounting
My turn in line comes
Leaving me wondering…?
Knowing so many will all have a moment
Late this night
As one’s mate snores loudly
And children toss and turn in their beds
Perhaps hungry
As dinner was spartan this night
Rendering sadness for you as the night wears on
And now…
You stand before the bathroom mirror
Moist eye lids pleading
Reflection recalling the day
And like so many others
The image before you wonders perhaps the complex question…
Am I who I think I am?
