Navigating Darkness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

An experience such as happened, not as a dream, not a fantasy, but a real glimpse into what might have been, usually is once in a lifetime event. But, twice? Once as a child and once as an adult. Well, perhaps timing is everything, or maybe we’re hardwired individually for that special moment, determined only by our tenacious brain and heart. (Image by alamy)

Navigating Darkness

You shadow-walked since birth,
This journey beyond ocean,
Where prickly pears gaze fondly
Our careful approach.

You watched as I connected,
Felines purred to sunlight's ray,
Reminding us danger comes in daylight as well.

Recall the sheet

Covering your young inanimate body,

The beating of your chest by your mother,

Your gasp and exhale that raised the sheet,

The doctor whose slack jaw was forever remembered

Remember the auto crash,
The rolling instants becoming hours,
The dust of salient messages premature,
All before the quiet
The safety urging…
Now?

Today

You climbed the pock marked coldness,
The ancient echoes whispering stories,
Some of joy,
Many of sorrow,
All part of a day's ticking time,
Waiting out tomorrow.

Still

How vigilant your silhouette,
Where light is dimming,
When some might pull the covers,
High across old eyes that refuse to accept,
While smiles stay fixed,
Upon your door,
Forever open.

Is there reason
Air floats endless mantras,
As the butterfly stays aloft,
Wings motionless,
Sustaining you both,
While your waning shadow
Ventures in all the wrong places,
Unwilling to acknowledge me?

“Perhaps.

But…

Embracing your total darkness?

Not our time yet, my haunting friend.”

If not "… Beating my chest by my mother," and "The doctor whose slack jaw was forever remembered," You could have been writing about my story.

It seems as though you remember my mother on a below zero night in January after I called her about three times to put my arms down that with no tricep muscles almost automatically came up over my head and were exposed to the cold air of Wisconsin winter. After about the third time, in frustration, she slapped my 21-year-old face, burst out crying and ran back the sanctuary of my parents' bedroom. Thankfully, she did not have to beat on my chest to revive my heart.

Exploring the darkness (and the light) has got to be one of the greatest challenges the poet can experience. You meet it well time after time. Well done!

We're certainly all hard (and soft) wired differently. What one person experiences once or twice, another may never experience, or maybe some do many times. Nonetheless, into the darkness we go, the wise and the creative. As it's been said: "True friends are those rare people who come find you in the dark and then lead you back to the light." One of the things I admire about you, is that your poetic construct is never superficial, insignificant, cosmetic, or ankle-deep. Peace and continued inspiration. rlc

Wow! We must have been on parallel wavelengths. A similar kind of poem came into my consciousness and it flowed effortlessly onto the page. Yours tapped deeper and with greater insights. Still, I had a glimpse of your mind and what drives your creative juices. And the payoff was priceless. A young woman from Ireland touched my soul with her comments. And they say that poetry does not pay well.
