God-Human Hercules

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In my youth, sequestered in my treehouse, Classic Comic books were my collector items. Among them, a story showing a muscular Hercules resting on his knotty club on which is draped his trademark skin and head of the Nemean lion – the first conquest of his 12 Labors.

God-Human Hercules

There once did live
My fortressed  treehouse escape,
With hammered sticks as steps,
Giving flight from reality,

My stronghold in the sky.

A tree that housed so many dreams,
Now but a burned out cavity,
Remains of remembered life
Entombed by climbing vines.

Within this tree,

Now of charred tenacity,
Imagined remains of crumbling statue of strength,
Steadfastly moving skyward atop its roots.

A wild flowered embrace surrounds its trunk,
Reaching up left and right,
Forgetting not the limbs
That once shaded its mythical protector.

How impassioned is the moment,

Upon visiting where once I did fantasize
My own kind of heroics,
Hidden by the branches and leaves,
Guarded by mythology I knew little of

Alone with my imagination as partner

Yet…

Today,

How prescient is the fantasized stone reality,
Askew like a court jester pondering me

From on high,
Seeming able to laugh at himself
And coaxing from me
A mutual grin of acceptance,

Knowing mythology

Had delivered to my boyhood

The strongest god-human on earth.

Times change.

Few enclosures are as treasured as a treehouse sanctuary where young boys and girls can dream without inhibitions. In your case it gave the world an artist, a poet, a friend of the spoken and the written word--a dreamer who dares to dream of times and places that no one else ever saw or heard or felt. Hercules was famous for his power, but power is surpassed by ideas, by poetry, and by imagination. Long live the artist, the poet, the youngsters who grow up to become legends in the hearts and minds of all who dare to dream of a time and place where treehouses flourish for those who will carry the torch.

I'm always amazed at the quality of Greek statuary. So interesting how they did hair and beards, preferring curly over straight. So we have good idea what their gods looked like, from their perspective. Their superheroes.

Classic Comics! Unfortunately, business students are always looking for shortcuts and when assigned a classic book to read would sometimes do a book report of the Classic Comic while studying for their MBA… Egad!
