Desperate % Growing

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With the media reminding us daily of the disparaging gap between the poor and the rich, America still draws the dreams of both the homeless and the refugee. And… there are some who harbor hatred for anything but white bread. Others see color as… well, perhaps there are some like me, it doesn’t exist. Skin is not what identifies humanity. Many would argue, “Jesus… grow up you people of centuries-old focus still wallowing in prejudice that doesn’t have a place in the salvation of this planet.”

Desperate % Growing

haves
have nots

people
humans

some finding
storefront sanctuaries
salvation this
salvation that
people in need

existence
dumpsters
trash cans
soup lines
cardboard blankets

eat
sleep
out of one box
into another
routine nightmares
perpetual

estranged
hunched over life
avoided by family
best friends
acquaintances
even favorite enemies

busy busy
stringing guitars on Mars
searching for Zeus in empty power drink cans
trying to understand
finding a place in line
ignoring the reality of unreality
scratching heads for something alive
anything
just something
alive

‘cause

suffocation cells stay dank
caged by sweat-stained bars
hellfire light
waste-filled air
while fear hoses the floor
despair wipes the walls

all while

squeezed in society's petri dish
the smallest % remains a truth
hard to contain
poised to ooze out
grow larger
beyond some delusional choice
to only see a microscopic presence

and now…

the desperate % painfully growing

with infusion of refugees

long past desperation

This country, in my humble opinion, is in the middle of a HUGE growing pain. Muscle spasms galore!! Sore spots that will remain sore for some time. Some injuries never healing completely. My, oh, my, Odin!!

Love ya!

The homeless population down here in San Diego (on the streets downtown) has increased dramatically in the last few months. Why? Seems the illegal immigrants are being forced now to coexist with the homeless. I was born when Dwight D. Eisenhower was commander and chief. And I can tell you that this present administration is the absolute worst I've ever known. Human beings will never save this planet.

Growing is right. I have read that climate change will force mass migration of people from areas sapped of their economic bounty by continual disasters like what are happening in Haiti and running up against defined national borders created by the haves to keep that have-nots in their place. Most of the immigrants that I know dream often of their country of origin and some, who are wealthy enough to not be on the street or in food and water lines, are even going back to their countries in retirement.

Haiti is a proud, black governed French-speaking Caribbean country. It is unfortunate, that like California, it is on a major fault zone. But unlike California, does not have vast natural resources or the educational system that turns out technological genius.

Your poem is a warning and a wake-up to those who would throw up barriers to the influx of new immigrants to North America who has been having immigrants arriving since the late 1500s. It's all about territorial jealousies rather than intellectual acceptance.

Your words capture the message of the photo with a stirring of feelings, yet they condense it to a level that touches me in a way that only a masterful mind can achieve.
