Deafening Silence

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Strangers, acquaintances, friends et al, know well the isolation echoes of silence in this age of solitary safety. A simple response is sometimes all one can count on.

Poem Artwork

Deafening Silence

Is it courage that beckons

He tap on the wall

After light has gone to rest,

All in the hope that

Someone,

Anyone,

Anything,

Might hear?

How dense the concussion of stillness.

How alone evasion makes one.

How famished the heart,

As estranged muteness stands defiant.

Is the world locked away

Where the turnkey

Responds only to the desperate?

His firm taps

Spell out his identity.

He dozes off.

His mind remaining in freefall.

His grounding remaining afloat

In the suffocating air of nothingness.

Compassion hears,

Sends him a painting of hope

Its colors gathering density

As he awakens

To the sound of his heartbeat

Gratefully heard above the din of silence.

Even vibrations of silence are without end,

And grace in one form or another,

Somewhere,

Sometime,

Receives,

And

Returns the wonderment

Like an ocean ripple cycling the shore.

"A simple response" Yes. A simple honest response with some light and love in it can make all the difference at times. The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. Related to this. Communicated well. Peace... r

Fascinating piece that captures the absoluteness of the kind of solitude that is truly unwanted. There is so much emptiness here, but longing fills the page and I am wishing to know what kinds of grace there are to return the wonderment, and I’m wanting to know more about the painting of hope, but I am guessing it may be a lovely or meaningful dream. “…colors gathering density….” was such a neat concept (even though I followed the words ‘colors gathering d…..’ and thought it was going to be the word ‘dust,’ so that made me borrow your ‘colors gathering…’ for the Marco Polo I wrote this morning of my thoughts answering your thoughts here). That is what I think happens in this writers’ den….we are Marcos and Polos. This is a full-throated poem, Deafening Silence. ~~ djl

Ah, that old bug-a-boo silence, how we love to write about it. Yet another interesting "take" in this poem. "Even vibrations of silence are without end," indeed ! !
