Halloween Headlines

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Okay, I’m not the award-winning Halloween poet, but this just passed through my head of frightening thoughts on the way to the dumpster, so I thought… why not. (Now, as he would say, “don’t start sending me hate mail. It’s just a joke…” for many.)

Halloween Headlines

First page of my scare book

Always a dark night

In a hilly city

Of mansions on hills

Or in Florida

Dealing with the fog

As the curfew takes hold

Gilded windows all dark

Curtains pulled

Cats in the basement

Holding court

For the rats

Some having been pardoned

In another life

I…

On a street corner

Where even spooks and freaks

Seldom occupy

Save the likes of me

Coatless

Where I’ve ventured

To look

To hand out candy

To scare the hair off the heads

Of any who will watch

As I whistle for my Bubba-sized black cat

Who’ll jump on my Jacko lantern and complete my look

Oh, so right

I have a strange Halloween mask

Whose long mane of blond hair

Makes the face skin of tan-burned essence

Appear like …

Like…

Oh, doG…

Do I have to utter his frightening name?

Such an insult to Mary Shelley

And…

Anyway…

On it goes.

You know it will make the headlines.

We all know how to make the headlines. The easiest way would be to wear just the mask as you indicated in your description of being coatless. I wonder how many brave kids would come up to get your free goodies like that? But you would be guaranteed to scare them and get the police and reporters there to make you famous for a day.

Whatever happened to that scary Nixon mask?

Great first and last lines. And everything in between. “To scare the hair off the heads,” I had to look up Mary Shelley, I only knew of Percy B. Good education for me and very Frankensteiny. Her middle name fits with your tombstone poem here = Wollstonecraft. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Very fitting, that. Fun poem. ~~ djl
