Nocturnal Epiphanies

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We all experience dreams that often seem more real than daytime consciousness. What do we do with such epiphanies?

Poem Artwork

Nocturnal Epiphanies

Where once there were sunrises waiting to be seen

     Even when clouds seemed heavy

And somewhere in last night's time in between

Emptiness filled the sky where once bright reminders pointed to dawns of tomorrow

     And memories yet to come

       Their road signs undiscovered

And when I woke and last night became today

All that seemed possible disappeared into the passing mist of drifting fog

The shorelines of my soul no longer seemed reachable

And friendly trade winds steered afar where once their warmth cradled my solitude.

Tonight will bring a new beginning

For time can not repeat itself

It can only continue forward as time

To leave behind that residue some have called memory

Where others have called it... what?  What was it called back then when

Nocturnal epiphanies

Made daytime reality bearable

Well expressed. I do recall during my working years. Sometimes daytime problems I couldn't solve came to me in a epiphany dreamscape and I solved them. But it was a shaky lot. Some of those solutions I couldn't remember and some of them were just plain illogical and didn't work.

On the other hand, many of my dreams turn into stories with characters and settings that I hadn't been thinking about during my waking hours. Over the years I have captured many of them in the morning and brought them to conclusion, something my dreams usually don't, running on and on until I wake. Without those nighttime tales, I believe my daytime imaginings would be very limited if at all.
