An Unquiet Heart

As both domestic turmoil and government leaderships falter and cause so much suffering, might it be said that there is for many men and women the fight or flight maxim as never before experienced? (Painting by Ero Ica)

Poem Artwork

An Unquiet Heart

As morning dawns,

Many toss and turn on buoyant

But unquiet dreams of flotation.

Why comes the turbulence,

Rushing life through such hearts

Like spillways of emotional purging,

Leaving behind but erosion

Evolving into a global dry moat

Of little defense against

Future onslaughts?

Yet…

Tomorrow could present

The entity of passion and intimacy,

Of governance with integrity

Knowing not of manipulation and deceit,

The essence of mutual affection, adoration, and respect,

A society like an impervious castle of strength

Made indomitable by its veracity and compassion.

Should such an experience of humanness appear,

Might we have the courage to pay homage

To this chance meeting of purity and truth,

Where joy’s vapor of honesty

Might nurture back the warmth

Of heart’s reservoir of life-flow?

Viva the pulsations of the unquiet heart

Keeping alive one’s resistance to acquiescence.

The "experience of humaneness" that you delineate in one of your stanzas presents an eloquent expression of hope for humanity if there ever was one. We definitely need that kind of hope during these desperate times, when there is very little humanity left and people hardly know the meaning of the word. Excellent and so well and timely written.

"it was the best of times. It was the worst of times." (Charles Dickens)

We are so spoiled. Particularly those of us in the United States with all of the safety nets regardless of the worst that can happen to us. We even can love despotic, narcissistic, greedy and pathological people in public office without too much damage to our lifestyles.

The problem is the news. It comes at us from sources close at hand, in some cases from citizens with cell phones taking videos, but primarily through multiple news reporting and spinning by all sorts of "experts" making things either better or worse. Most of it, rather desperate and eminently dangerous.

If it were possible to take all of the complainers and put them back simply 100 years ago during the roaring 20s, they would, in spite of economic prosperity, want to get the hell out of that time and back here ASAP.

But your heart is pictured as blue. Yes, we live today like the blue bloods did back in 1922. When the flappers went braless but weren't really very attractive like my grandmother.

Ron
