Except You

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To know oneself seems clear when we overcome the formidable challenge of needing to be understood. Arguably, WE create most of our reality. Yet, many would retreat into victimization, given the most obstinate challenge is the one facing the mirror every day. (Image by Annie Tarasova)

Poem Artwork

Except You

So,
What do you do,
You who rush to be somewhere
Knowing others clamor to jump ahead,
To be there waiting to push you back?

What do you do,
You whose dreams remain tenuous
Without the courage to risk,
Whose narrow window of time ticks backward
For fear of the future,
Who needs what others wish to prevent,
To stand upon your own weathered peak?

Inclement passage need not be feared,
For the route only you know
Traverses through your own created clouds,
Revealing sunlight you also create
Above the storms no one else can own
Except you.

You present a real challenge. Not to just look in the mirror and judge, but to set a goal that is right for you and then go for it. When you reach that goal, that pinnacle, look for another one to conquer. Your image suits the poem very well.

I am fortunate to look back with pleasure of where I've been. And now, faced with a new reality that only I know based on what others think of my reality, move ever forward. Not stopping until I'm stopped by the reaper of us all.

"Above the storms no one else can own." A verse so incisive and so true. We have our own road, our own mountain to climb, our own successes and failures, and it's an ownership worth having. Fine sentiments found in this poem.

This is a curious piece. Intriguing title, exacting image, and “…challenge is the one facing the mirror every day.” sets the tone for the last, and my favorite, stanza. I just love those last three lines. Also, “Whose narrow window of time ticks backward/For fear of the future,” sure did make me fit myself into that line, especially the “For fear of the future” part. I like writing that I can put on to see how it feels to wear. Yours offers that often. {last line stanza 2 has one typo}. ~~ djl
