Life's Compass

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Far too many see the purpose of aging is to finally deliver us to death’s door. Others see growing older more akin to the aging of a fine vintage wine… only acquiring all its essence with the gathering of extended time… eternal.

Life’s Compass

What freedom does the ship of living find

When afloat on an ocean of past and future motion,

Where currents of destiny tempt one’s willingness to confront

The ebb and tide of shoreline’s lure,

Beckoning the docking of one’s journey,

The enticement to dropping anchor

Where not accepting life’s fathomless chasm

Makes lost unknown buried treasures of discovery

Merely waiting to be explored?

How plebeian…

To lower the anchor of myopic plight,

Accepting less than tenacity’s risk avails.

How sublime…

Knowing precipitous horizons

Do not exist

In the nature of existence.

For…

To give up the pursuit of the ever-moving sunrise,

Sunset,

Moonset,

Is to oblige the mooring of life,

To cut short the voyage

And it’s rewarding realization,

Never discovering actuality entreats eternal.

Hoisting one’s sails…

Discerning life’s true north

Renders only occasional navigational shifts

Targeting the winds of change,

Trusting life’s compass

To point toward the next iteration

Of empyrean continuance.

Your thoughts on aging are vintage indeed, like an expensive old wine that is incomparable. Life seen through the imagery of the ship, casting anchor, at anchor, is most apt, especially for those who "cut short the voyage and its rewarding realization never discovering actuality entreats eternal."

You are so right. Most seem to just decline into safety and repetition boredom until they shuffle off the mortal coil may be nothing more than lots of children, grandchildren, etc. to over populate the earth over consuming what they need and getting by without earning it.

But for the few, like you and I who choose not to just stagnate even though we are restricted physically from doing what we did before, like climbing mountains and trying out the latest whizzbangs and designer drugs, we chose to remain mentally active and productive. Taking on all new challenges with a sharp response and critical eye.

May you continue on the course of these gems of wisdom until the day you and I are gone.

Ron
