Craven Tears

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To know a woman who over the span of 20 years, found she only wept on 3 occasions, is indeed an anomaly. Such a woman is still struggling to understand her inability to weep.
“Tears are words the heart can’t express” – Whitney Fancher
“Those who do not weep, do not see.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Craven Tears

What is it to see
but never emerge from the dark?

Children marvel at color,
movement,
perception,
not knowing
control mongers await them,
famished gluttons who relish
adults obviating consciousness.

Some risk emotional pain,
while too few discover
healing is not a poultice
to cover a wound.

Rather…

Restoration of feelings

require a cleansing through

listening,

viewing,

touching

the threats

urging humankind’s natural defenses

to address the storm blasts

of hollow oxygenated expressions

programmed to destroy observation's

allowance for truth or falsehood
to become naked

before sentient awareness.

Risk awaits,
perhaps muddied,
but nevertheless
always at the ready,
actuality's hardened muscles ready to serve,
to discern platitudes from profundity.

How courageous
such willingness to risk,
knowing to bandage-cover
is to embrace the temporary fix,
ignorance's wanton indulgence,
urging an anesthetized existence,

unwilling to advance…

But why?

Might it be,

those of fear

cower before possible truth,

awaiting instead inevitable emotional fissures
to disgorge their craven tears,

not accepting a simple honest tear

could be all that’s needed to

seal the disquietude of dreaded anticipation?

I'm sorry, but this one is too deep for my feeble mind. Tears are involuntary and come with both intense emotion or joy. Actors, sometimes, are able to emote tears for their performance. I'm not sure what craven means, so I'll leave it at that.

It would take more than a single tear. It would require many gut-wrenching purges. I've known several like this over the years. Two of them became alcoholics, and one (in the last several years) put a gun to his head. In my experiences: people do not (or cannot) weep because they don't feel anything any deeper than superficial. And even though those struggling in the depths of this kind of melancholia can be rational and continue their daily duties, it is, without a doubt, one of the danger signs of melancholic depression.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning captured well this inability to cry in her poem 'GRIEF' Back then they likened those in the grips of melancholia, who could not cry, to marble statues. An appropriate juxtapose. Browning likened grief to: "a silence like death, most like a monumental set, in everlasting watch and moveless woe, till itself crumble to the dust beneath. Touch it, the marble eyelids are not wet, if it could weep it would rise and go." Thank you for sharing such naked honesty. I've never had any trouble weeping, as was proven once again reading this. r
