Layers of Living
Ripple or Storm,
It comes in such varied ways.
It may start out like a raindrop arresting quiet waters
Or like a skipping rock gliding across a pond,
A wager on how many lucky skips it will make.
Confusing as it may be,
Such a state of mind
Is like a monkey trying to touch his own reflection in the water,
But the touching causes the image ripples
To go outward, but then inward, right back at him.
Still…
Ever flowing is one’s life canvas of successes and mistakes.
Emotional colors coalesce,
Vying for happiness shades,
As existence seems calm at the moment.
Pigments of love and hate will continue
Blending their purpose
To dominate the essence of the moment,
Knowing another ripple or storm
Will subtly
Or
Aggressively
Add its layer of inevitable change.
For like it’s said,
Nothing stays the same.
Living life’s layers happily
Requires remaining aware,
Prepared for today’s
Mirror reflective waters
Or
Tempest waves
Running aground its layers of being
Becoming but a stratum of itself,
A two-dimensional remembrance
Atop the mantle of memories.
From the wisdom of Forrest Gump we get, "Life is like a box of chocolates…" Everyone knows that experience who has tried a box of chocolates. That caramel, so sweet, always gets stuck on my teeth to irritation! And some of those fillers are downright poisonous!
We certainly do not know what happens after this life. But that's like not being able to understand the complex equations of string theory and then proclaiming that you know what is going on in the universe from a headline or two that you read in social media. Or have had repeatedly drummed into your brain from birth so that you can think of no other way. The perfect human drone going through life under those narrow cult rules promising a kind of lightness like being able to deify earthly gravity and even death.
As you can see, your poem draws from me many thoughts I can't help but relate.
